More About Codependency…

Often, a person who is codependent, whether met with mood disorders and/or addiction, may find themselves feeling ‘out of balance’ or experience ‘an imbalanced sense of self’ in relationships. This ‘imbalance’ leaves them feeling ‘out of control’, fearful of losing the relationship, fearful of abandonment, fear of ‘not being enough’, experiencing a sense of ‘doom’ when things are going well and often feeling ‘stuck’. People who struggle with codependency have challenges building trust and intimacy within relationships and often have difficulty communicating with others.

Codependents and/or people afflicted with mood disorders, personality disorders, substance abuse and substance dependence, family dysfunction and more, often experience the following thoughts, feelings and behaviors:

*rage, intense fear, feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, feelings of inadequacy, jealousy, envy, shame, guilt, thoughts about suicide, thoughts of and/or engagement in self harming behaviors, often experience ruminating/ worrying thoughts, often experience negative or harsh thinking patterns, often have ‘perfectionistic’ ideals for self and/or others, find themselves isolating from others, avoiding their feelings and/or engagement with others, engage in disordered eating and/or have eating disorders, experience a dependence and/or addiction to sex/ work/ gambling/ gaming, experience ‘rigid’ type thinking patterns, struggle with creating boundaries for self and others and often experience challenges creating and sustaining intimacy within relationships.*

At CodaCare2020 our clients are supported in identifying and reconnecting to their emotions safely and supported in learning how to ‘tolerate’ emotions that, at one time, felt ‘intolerable’. Clients begin to explore belief systems within themselves that have contributed to barriers from their authentic selves, family, friends and communities.
